Tips to Avoid Package Delivery Scams

Man with package delivery

You should be wary of any unsolicited texts, phone calls, emails, or tags on your door that warn of a shipping or delivery problem that requires immediate attention.

These scam messages can look real. They might even include a legitimate delivery company’s logo. Then they’ll give you a link to click or a phone number to call.

Don’t do it. Never click the link or call the number in an unsolicited message.

Clicking the link could download malware to your device, and calling that phone number might lead you to share personal information that could be costly, like your credit card number, social security number, or other sensitive data.

If you get a message like this, what should you do?

If you’re expecting a package, go to the carrier’s website directly, or check with the retailer to see the status of your order. If there is an issue, contact the company directly, and not through the information in the text or email.

Remember, legitimate shipping companies will never ask you for personal information through a text or email. They also won’t demand immediate payment with gift cards or wire transfers.

If you see one of these ‘urgent’ notices, don’t panic. Take the time to think things through so you don’t get wrapped up in a package delivery scam.
